Woman creates jewelry from breast milk

Like many crafty young women, Ann Marie Sharoupim, 28, makes and sells her own jewelry. But the Rutherford, NJ, mom of two uses an unusual material to craft her necklaces and bracelets: the breast milk of her customers.

They want to preserve the sweetest, closest moments they had with their little ones, says Sharoupim, who peddles her creations on her Web site, MammasLiquidLove.com.

Shes one of an estimated dozen women around the world selling such baubles, and the demand ­­is growing.

For the mommy set that favors home births and doulas and eats their placentas in their rustic-chic kitchens, its the next logical step.

Sharoupim has customers send in an ounce or two of carefully packaged breast milk. (She recommends medical-grade storage containers.) She then uses a proprietary process shes also a pharmacist to turn the milk into a solid, resin-based material that looks almost pearl-like in dainty pieces, ranging from a vintage-style pendant ($45) to simple sterling silver earrings ($100).

I worked for months to come up with a way to create jewelry that would last, says Sharoupim, who has been making the accessories since January and has seen a huge jump in sales each month, despite only promoting it on Facebook and via word of mouth.

The baubles are a tangible way to showcase breast-feeding success, even if the milky way was a rocky road.

Why new parents shouldn’t feel so guilty about sleep training

Trying to solve the problem of a sleep-challenged baby can present a minefield of guilt-inducing choices for new parents.

While co-sleeping and nursing a baby back to sleep are surefire techniques for some, public health officials warn against the risks of bed-sharing and some experts say those strategies don’t help children learn how to self-soothe.

Yet parents who choose a form of sleep training, often inaccurately described with the catchall term “cry it out,” are sometimes told the approach may cause their children long-term emotional damage.

Regardless of one’s choice, the intense judgment can make parents forget why they’re trying to help their baby sleep better in the first place: Months-long sleep deprivation may cause fatigue that leads to, among other things, frequent arguments with a partner and exhaustion that’s dangerous for their physical or mental health.

These are alarming experiences, but mothers in particular often feel pressure to ignore or downplay them and compromise their well-being by using sleep techniques that feel less shameful, even if they’re not effective for their child and family.

That’s why the newPediatricsstudyon sleep training is such an important step forward in talking about how families can have both well-rested babies and parents.

The randomized, controlled study evaluated what happened when parents of 43 infants used two different sleep-improvement methods: graduated extinction, which instructs parents to respond with brief interval-based checkins, and bedtime fading, a little-known technique that focuses on inducing sleepiness by gradually delaying bedtime. A third group, the control, only received information on best sleep practices. The babies were between 6 and 16 months old and healthy; many experts do not recommend attempting to sleep train before 6 months.

Despite the common belief that sleep training may cause permanent harm to a child while also damaging the bond with its parents, the study found that the children in the graduated extinction group, which is akin to the so-called “cry-it-out” method, didn’t have that experience.

The researchers determined this by measuring the babies’ level of cortisol, a stress hormone, over time, and they saw no evidence of significant increases. They also found no major difference between the babies’ emotional behavior and their parent-child bond a year later as compared to all of the groups. The graduated extinction approach even significantly reduced nighttime wakefulness and led to a moderate decrease in maternal stress. However, over the longer term, babies in both the bedtime fading and control group showed improvements in how long they slept.

The study complements previous research indicating that sleep training may not have long-term negative effects, though a small 2012 study indicated it could be highly stressful for infants.

“It’s a really great addition to the literature,” said Rebecca Parlakian, senior director of programs at Zero to Three, a nonprofit child development organization said of the new research. “The study validated that theres a lot of ways you can parent a baby and neither one is better or worse.”

Michael Gradisar, co-author of the study and director of theChild and Adolescent Sleep Clinic at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, told Mashable via email that he was surprised by the results. He believed the cortisol levels would likely increase for the infants in the sleep training group.

“[T]heres a lot of ways you can parent a baby and neither one is better or worse.”

“I did expect this to happen, and was probably swayed by the volume of people who claim this occurs,” he said.

Gradisar and his colleagues didn’t sample cortisol levels during the interventions so they couldn’t observe temporary spikes that might result from crying or fussing. Yet he noted that it made sense for the children to ultimately have normal cortisol levels.

“Usually when chronic levels of cortisol appear in children, it’s due to chronic stress over many hours of the day and across many weeks and months,” Gradisar said. By comparison, graduated extinction typically takes a few days before it’s successful.

That should give parents who have tried or are curious about graduated extinction some relief, but freeing one’s self from personal or public judgment can feel impossible.

Dr. Carly Snyder, who specializes in reproductive psychiatry in New York City, says she treats sleepless mothers who experience irritability, low motivation, anxiety, depression and tearfulness. Even when the newborn stage has long passed and they’re still desperate for rest, mothers also fear trying sleep strategies that might be perceived, by themselves or their babies, as abandonment.

Snyder encourages each patient to make the choice that’s right for her family, but also stresses the importance of quality sleep.

“Emotionally speaking, I am a big believer that if mom is not sleeping, there is no intervention thats going to be better than improving moms sleep,” she said.

She also advises patients against framing their sleep struggles as an adversarial relationship between mother and child, because babies also require ample sleep for their emotional and brain development.

“Its important for parents to know theyre allowed to change their mind.”

Part of the struggle for many parents, saidParlakian, is that they feel beholden to a certain philosophy or strategy, and when it doesn’t work as they hoped, don’t feel capable of pivoting to something new.

“Its important for parents to know theyre allowed to change their mind,” she said.

That could be true of the parent who tried sleep training on a pediatrician or friend’s strong recommendation, but felt their child experienced too much distress over too long a time period. It could also be true for the parent focused on a so-called gentle method like nursing or rocking, but discovered their child refused to fall asleep for hours.

Flexibility isn’t an easy response to muster in this age of high-anxiety parenting nor is advocating for a parent’s own needs or those of the entire family.

“At the root of it we have to remember its not just about healthy children,” Parlakian said, “its about healthy families.”

Though Gradisar’s findings need to be replicated with larger sample sizes, his study and others like it have the potential to change those dynamics, even if slightly. When parents have evidence that graduated extinction is both effective and not harmful, they may be more confident in their sleep-related decisions.

Critics who argue for sleep solutions that don’t involve crying or the absence of a parent may eventually need to reassess their concerns about risk.

Gradisar said he valued the role of science in helping to resolve controversial questions regarding infant sleep, noting the “heightened emotion” the subject often raises.

“What I dislike is when people guilt desperate mums into not intervening with their infant’s sleep,” he said. “Getting good sleep is so important.”

Newborns Pose In Plaster Casts Of Their Moms’ Pregnant Bellies

Jocelyn Conway takes an original approach to newborn photos.

Since February 2015, the U.K. photographer has been taking pictures of babies in “bump bowls” — plaster casts of their mothers’ pregnant bellies.

These “bump bowl” picturesare a creative approach to newborn photography.

“I love the idea of the baby being back in its bump for a photo!” Conway told The Huffington Post. “The babies usually love being back in their casts! They seem to settle straight back in to their ‘home’ for the last nine months! It’s lovely to see!”

The photographer took a body casting course five years ago, and eventually came up with the idea for her now trademarked “Bump Bowl” project to put her new skills into practice. She generally makes the casts when the mother is about 34 to 36 weeks pregnant.

For the safety and comfort of the babies, each image is created as a composite of multiple photos, so the newborn is always physically supported in the bowl.

Conway shared a glimpse into her process in creating these photos.

Said Conway, “I love doing the bump casts. It’s such a privilege to be a part of someone’s life at such a special time, and be involved in making memories for the family and for the baby when he or she is older.”

All of us, in one way or another, were born. Some of us came quietly, others kicking and screaming. A couple of our dads filmed the whole thing on a camcorder or iPhone. But none of us were born on Facebook Live.

Until now.

 

Expectant father Fakamalo Kihe Eiki filmed the delivery in several stages, from early contractions to what seem to be the final pushes, noting that he wasmissing an important court date to see the birth in person.

 
 

Comments from friends were supportive, ranging from “Absolutely beautiful” to “You can do it, PUSSSSH” to “MAZEL TOV.” Eiki, for his part, seems happy: “Thanks guys for enjoying the gift of life with me… lol come celebrate next weekend bbq if in area,” he wrote.

Is this the beginning of a world in which people are visible on social media from the very beginning of life to the bitter end? Probably, yeah. Enjoy!

10 strange pregnancy symptoms that are nothing to worry about | Fox News

 

You already know what to expect during pregnancy: weight gain, morning sickness and fatigue.

But with all of the hormones and changes your body goes through, there are other pregnancy symptoms that might surprise you. And while they may be strange, theyre completely normal.

Although its always a good idea to talk to your doctor first, rest assured these 10 common symptoms are nothing to worry about.

1.      Excess vaginal discharge
Leucorrhea, or an increase in vaginal discharge, is common and happens because of the hormonal changes that happen during pregnancy.

The hormones cause the glands in the vagina to have an increased production of secretions which then manifests itself as leucorrhea, said Dr. Kelly Kasper, a board-certified OB-GYN at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.

Excess vaginal discharge can also occur as you near your due date because the cervix will begin to ripen, or become soft to prepare your body to give birth.

Vaginal discharge thats white to light yellow is nothing to worry about, but if it becomes itchy or has an odor it could mean you have a yeast infection. Also, if the discharge is persistent and watery, it could mean youre leaking amniotic fluid, so call your doctor immediately.

2. Spotting
Between 20 and 40 percent of women will have spotting during the first trimester and most of the time its simply because more blood is being pumped into the cervix. Spotting can also happen because of implantation bleeding when the embryo is implanted in the uterine lining, which happens between six and twelve days after fertilization.

A small amount of light pink or brown blood is normal but if its bright red or its heavy like your period, call your physician. Bleeding could indicate placenta previa or a miscarriage but most of the time, its normal and will resolve itself.

Dont freak about it because it happens a lot and most people are fine. But do take precautions and talk to your physician thats what theyre there for, said Jeanne Faulkner, a registered nurse in Portland, Ore., author of Common Sense Pregnancy: Navigating a Healthy Pregnancy and Birth for Mother and Baby and host of the Common Sense Pregnancy & Parenting podcast.

3. Bloody noses and bleeding gums
The pregnancy hormones that increase the blood vessel supply throughout the body can also make the tissues in the nose and gums hypersensitive. As a result, you might have a bloody nose and notice that your gums bleed when you brush them or have a dental cleaning.

Running a humidifier at night and using a saline nasal spray or gel can help keep your nasal passages moist. When you brush your teeth, use a soft bristle toothbrush and brush gently.     

4. Skin tags
Skin tags are small outpockets or excess skin growths that show up in the folds of the body like the neck, the underarms and the groin and usually develop between the fourth and six month of pregnancy.

Although its unclear why they happen, it might be due to hormones and weight gain. There also seems to be a genetic component and they tend to happen more frequently with age.

Sometimes they regress or fall off after pregnancy but most of the time, theyre markers of pregnancy and they tend to stay until your dermatologist snips it off or burns it off, said Dr. Doris Day, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City and author of Forget the Facelift: Turn Back the Clock with Dr. Days Revolutionary Four-Step Program for Ageless Skin.

If you notice new or changing skin lesions or moles, however, tell your doctor at your next prenatal visit to make sure its not skin cancer, which is common but treatable during pregnancy.

5. Racing heart or a pumping sensation in the ear
The increased blood volume means theres more blood for your heart to pump throughout your body, so your heart has to work harder. If you feel your heart beating harder or even hear the sound of your heart beating in your ear, know that its nothing to stress out about.

6. Varicose veins in the legs and the vulva
As your blood volume increases and your uterus and baby grow, the pressure on the large blood vessels can make it difficult for the blood to circulate back to your lower extremities. 

As a result, the blood can pool and create varicose veins in your legs and even in your vulva, which happens in about 10 percent of women and can be quite uncomfortable.
